BANGKOK: Myanmar officials have given Asean foreign ministers assurance that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and will be looked after, Asean’s special envoy on Myanmar, Maria Theresa Lazaro said today.

Lazaro, who is the foreign secretary of the Philippines, said the assurance was given during an informal meeting between Myanmar’s foreign minister U Tin Maung Swe and Asean foreign ministers in Bangkok.

“My recollection of the statement of the Myanmar foreign minister on Aung San Suu Kyi is that she is in good health and that the premise of how he said this is that she is a relative, she is a sister, and therefore we will take care of her,” Lazaro said at a joint press conference with Thai foreign minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

However, Aung San Suu Kyi’s exact whereabouts remain unknown, but she has been transferred to a designated location, Lazaro said. Earlier this month, Lazaro had requested a meeting with Aung San Suu Kyi, but Myanmar declined the request.

Sihasak said the Asean special envoy should be given an opportunity to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi “so that we can be able to verify the claims that the (Myanmar) foreign minister made”.

The 81-year-old Suu Kyi has been detained since the military seized power in February 2021. In May this year, she was transferred to house arrest after spending more than five years in prison.
