PETALING JAYA: Dr Lee Wei Ling, the daughter of Singapore’s first prime minister, Lee Kuan Yew, has died at the age of 69.
Wei Ling, a neurologist who headed Singapore’s National Neuroscience Institute as director from 2004 to 2014, had been diagnosed with a rare, degenerative brain disorder four years ago, The Straits Times reported.
Her death at home was disclosed by her younger brother, Hsien Yang, in a Facebook post at 5.50am today.
Wei Ling, the second of three children, is also the sister of senior minister and former prime minister Hsien Loong.
Announcing her diagnosis in a Facebook post on Aug 8, 2020, Wei Ling described it as a “rather nasty brain disease” that will result in death “for the fortunate”, The Straits Times said.
It said the condition affects physical movements, walking, balance and eye movements and eventually swallowing, and can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and choking.
